In this intent to enlist note (above) from 1864, William Muffley was unable to sign his name.  Note the X next to his name at the lower right and the notation his mark beside it.  The k in mark is off the edge of the paper and so is missing.  This portion of the enlistment intention is notable as William represented his age as 43 years old, when in fact, he was 58 years old.

In 1864 William Muffley was unable to sign his name.  In his pension application files of the early 1880's, he signs his own name.

In 1895 William's wife Nancy petitioned for a widow's pension.

On the 16th of March in 1889 William Muffley petitioned for a re-rating and increase in his war pension.  Signing as a witness was his eldest daughter, Louisa Hunt (Louisa Muffley).

William Henry is William's son.  This signature appears on an 1891 application for increase in his father's pension, based on the degree of incapacity of his father and the age discrepancy between actual and that which appears in the military and pension records to that time.

Myrtle Muffley is the daughter of William Henry and the granddaughter of William and Nancy.  This signature appears as witness to her grandmother's (Nancy's) application for widow's pension in 1895.

Carrie Muffley (Carrie Loomis) married James Monroe Muffley in Osage, Iowa in the late 1870's.  This signature is made sometime after the marriage.  It is taken from the inside page of the Household Edition of Dickens' Nicholas Nickleby.

Minnie Muffley (Minnie Hopley) signed a letter to her sons describing her wishes in distribution of her effects.  The letter is dated January 8, 1960.
